Dot Day Spotlight: SJKC Lick Hung Primary Discovers The Real Meaning Behind "The Dot"

The 2019 International Dot Day celebration was a success at SJKC Lick Hung Primary during their annual Chinese Reading Camp in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. Hosted by parent volunteer, Jessica Ng, campers painted dots, signed them, and learned about the value of the story “The Dot,” by Peter H. Reynolds. The children were able to make more dots outside of their school, which each one was eager to join in. Jessica was kind enough to explain why she celebrates Dot Day.

Jessica shared: “An old chocolate box with different colors at each of its face caught my attention when I was looking for a suitable book to be read at my children’s school. It was model my twins made for the book ‘Sky Colour’. It reminded me of how we would spent afternoons reading Peter Reynolds’ books, followed by creating flying cars with Lego blocks, drawing ish-looking pictures. Peter H. Reynolds naturally became the author which I would feature at the school event. When I learnt about International Dot Day while browsing for more ideas, I was all set to celebrate this meaningful day with the children, embracing courage, creativity and Collaboration.”

Jessica and a team of parent volunteers set up stations called “dot stations” to encourage young artists to paint their own dots after discovering what “The Dot” is all about. Every artist signed their name after their creations were completed, and left behind their own dots for later. The children encouraged others to try new things, including one child who told her mom she needed to try skating to understand how fun the activity is. Jessica took the time to take “The Dot” song by Emily Arrow and translated it to Chinese with the help of her friend, Kimberly.

By the end of the program, campers were encouraged to leave marks on a “dot board”, and parents were able to join in on the fun as well. Thankfully, Ms. Ting was able to capture some photos of the children's first Dot Day Celebration.
