Paul Reynolds & Andrea Calvin to Participate in MCLA STEM Week

Paul Reynolds and Andrea Calvin are excited to join the STEM week activities at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, MA.

STEM Week was created by the Baker-Polito Administration to boost students’ interest and raise awareness of STEM education so that educators at all grade levels may participate by planning STEM-based lessons, events and activities throughout the week. Students from pre-kindergarten through high school and postsecondary institutions are encouraged to take part in hands-on learning that aligns topics across STEM subjects and connects to other curricula.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, MCLA will present “Who Said it had to be a Go Cart?: Going Places with FabMaker Studio,” in CSI room 124 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. During this event, Paul A. Reynolds, award-winning author and co-founder of FableVision, as well as the Reynolds Center for Teaching, Learning and Creativity in Boston, will share how his own journey has been fueled by creativity.

Along with sharing anecdotes and original media, he will share the book “Going Places,” illustrated by his twin brother, Peter H. Reynolds. The story helps celebrate the most critical 21st century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

Following Reynolds’ talk, students will join Andrea Calvin ’04, vice president of the Reynolds Center, for hands-on experience with FabMaker Studio. During this workshop, students will put the “Going Places” message in action and create their own unique vehicle and use the engineering design process to develop their paper prototype in Fab@School Maker Studio.

Peter H. Reynolds to Speak at Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival

  • Concordia University in Nebraska (map)

Peter H. Reynolds to Speak at Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival in Nebraska on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the Weller Auditorium.

Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival was founded in 1996 and seeks to encourage a love of reading, writing and books by bringing nationally renowned authors and illustrators to Nebraska.

New York Times best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds (“The Dot,” “The Word Collector,” “Judy Moody”) will talk about creating bravely in his session “One Brave Dot.”  “I just can’t draw.” These words, uttered by a 1st grader nearly twenty years ago, inspired Peter’s mission to urge all of us to “make our mark” bravely. While his book, “The Dot” (which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year) is about art and a great art teacher, the book is a ultimately a metaphor for being brave enough to take that first brave step and see where it takes us. Peter’s newest books “Happy Dreamer” and “The Word Collector” dare us to keep positive, keep dreaming and keep finding powerful words to help express what we are thinking, feeling and dreaming. Peter will share a sneak peek of his upcoming book, “Say Something!” which reminds readers that the world needs our voice, all voices. In a world where a few loud, boomy voices drown out the more nuanced voices, marginalized voices, this book is a rallying cry for all of us to share what we believe and how we’ll move the world to a better place.
